The second preview for Talisman: The Frostmarch

The odor of sulphur and burnt flesh wafts from the open mouth of the Warlock’s den. Though this place turns your stomach, you have no choice but to press on; your quest has brought you to this dimly lit cave, and the enigmatic man you seek is your only hope of achieving victory. As your eyes adjust, a voice echoes around you. “I know why you are here, adventurer, and what you seek. But first, you must do something for me...”

Welcome to the second preview for the upcoming expansion to Talisman, The Frostmarch! Last time, we looked at two characters who are set to face the sinister Ice Queen this winter. Today, we’ll explore some the many new Warlock Quests, look at new Adventure and Spell cards that play off of those quests, and even get a sneak peek at the Warlock playable character!

Though not the first expansion to include Warlock Quest cards, The Frostmarch features them prominently. An alternative to simply visiting the Warlock’s Cave and rolling a die to determine your quest, Warlock Quest cards present variety and flavor to the process of earning your all-important Talisman.

Whether besting a mighty dragon or visiting the perilous Enchantress (with her penchant for morphing unwary adventurers into slimy toads), you can be assured that Warlock Quest cards offer a heavy dose of risk, but the reward is well worth it!

Focusing on this new level of risk, many other cards have effects that directly relate to Warlock Quests in some way.

The fearsome Glory Seeker, for example, is a formidable foe who will effectively “steal” your quests out from under you! The False Grail burdens its unlucky bearer with a one-track mind; you cannot have any Warlock Quests before you rid yourself of it. And finally, the Lake of Visions is a pool of prognostication from which adventurers can select the Warlock Quest they’d most like to have... until the Lake itself disappears as suddenly as arrived.

Manipulating these quests even further is the mysterious Warlock, a new neutral playable character who is the first ever to begin the game outside the outer region! His high Craft, as well as his ability to regain all Spells at the start of each of his turns, make him a potent magic user. But equally impressive is his ability to name his own reward after completing Warlock Quests!

Hi Velhart,

Thank you for your help.The last time we played a talisman and there was this problem and it costed me victory...there are many unclear things at talisman that we have to ask people on forums for strange things...Thanks again...see ya

Hi Cvetko,

You second question is correct.

If you roll enough to land on the Plain of Peril, then you must first defeat the Cerberus, and then you can try to open the Portal to land on the Plain of Peril

i have a question...Cerberus is on the portal of power and i want to go to the inner region,must i land on the portal of power and defeat the cerberus and then go on different space and then try again to open the portal of power,or (i am on the woods in the middle region and i roll 6 for my move)can go straigt to the plain of peril and beacuse of cerberus first defeat him and then try to open the portal of power?? Tenks;)

I agree...but i have noticed that the warlock starts in warlock Cave in Middle reigon,and that is sick,he can go to the temple or hidden valley or castle to heal up+spells each round...it is not balanced with the other charatcers...he can easily win the game with a bit of luck...the game can be over in an hour...the only one who can reach him very fast is probably the leprechaun,beacuse of his gold ability in the woods(axe3gold)...or the Ogre chieftan who can dominate monsters(beat the Sentinel)....the characters are balanced,but only in this expansion!!

From the looks of it, he is a normal character, and not a special one..

The Wizard and the Warlock are both good characters.

Maybe that the Wizard is still better because of his psychic ability and 3 fate, but the warlock has the ability to gain max spells. He must use them all, to win the game ! :)

There is nothing wrong with him:)

But the Wizard always has at least one spell. The Warlock always has at least two or three spells (once he has raised his craft to 6). He has the same stats as the Wizard. He is either as good or better than the Wizard in all respects. This is why I suspect that he might not be a starter character; but rather an upgrade of some kind.

The characters are getting very strange with each new expansion...i wonder when it will all stop?

I mean there are some characters that can beat the warlock or the leprechaun,the warlock has like the wizard a lot of craft,but only 2 strength,that means if ou are assasin or troll or knihgt,you can easilly eliminate them;)

At most, the Warlock would get 3 spells in a turn; as craft 6 or better permits 3 spells maximum. Even so, the ability is obviously too powerful. I am wondering if the Warlock is not actually a starting character at all, but rather you can effectively become the warlock later on by completing a set number of quests. This would make him a bit like the "job" careers like High Mage and Master Thief that you could get in the 2nd edition Talisman City expansion. It would make more sense if he was as he seems way too strong for a starting career.

I liked everything i have seen til i see the warlock spell skill. Him being able to pull full spell complement every round is too powerful to start with. Means he'll have 5 spells after every turn. It should be like the wizard where if you dont have any spells draw ONE at the start of your turn.  He other skill i have no issues. If this cards comes out this way I will have my first house rule for the game :) "Warlock gains one spell at the start of his turn if he has no spells."

I look forward to any expansion released for Talisman but what I've seen so far from this expansion isn't as thrilling as the others. The Warlock Quest cards are way to easy to accomplish. Even if you draw a difficult quest, there is no penelties for not completing it. Talismans are easy to find anyway and they are absolutly worthless until the very end of the game. My friends and I refer to Talismans as future gold pieces because thats all they are good for. Unless you are playing the alternate ending where you complete four quest before you can end the game the quest are nearly usless.

I would have much rather seen an improved expansion for the remarkablly easy middle region or a city expansion. I want a city expansion for the simple fact that I need somewhere to spend gold. This game seems to have an abundance of gold but nothing to spend it on. I love this game but I would like to large box expansions that truly inpact the base game instead of alternate ending expansions. I hope Frost Match does not disappoint. Keep up the good work FFG.

 

P.S. The Warlock Char is way way to overpowerd. I think he will be banned from our games real soon.

I am very satisfied what i have seen so far.

It's a new element to combine adventure cards with warlock cards and the warlock ending card.

After a huge debate about the old warlock cards from the Reaper expansion, that they are too easy, people cannot argue anymore, because you( FFG) have made some dangerous cards for that deck.

people must think twice now for picking up a warlock card or not:)

I am also wondering if they are adventure cards that has something to do with the Ice Queen, so she will do something if you draw a adventure card that allow her to activate her abilties or some sort..

Off course, she must be in the game, otherwise it don't work..

I am still wondering what she will do as a ending card.

I am very happy that she has become a very important enemie in this edition of Talisman and one of my wishes came true.

The other one is the Dragon Tower, but most people know already that i like it very much:)

I am looking forward for more cards at the third preview of Talisman !

The whole quest idea is just plain bland.  There are enough ways to get a talisman.  This expansion doesn't really look appealing - just 4 characters and the Warlock is just an overpowered spellcaster - and his quest ability that defines him is crap. Likewise the Ogre Chieftan is an overpowered strength 5 character, and the leprechaun just slows the game down from constantly, pointlessly picking up tonnes of gold.  Hopefully the additional cards make up for it.

Still a fun game, but i think with now 3 expansions out (with only 12 just as unbalanced characters) It is not looking like overtaking the previous editions.
