|Descent: Journeys In The Dark | Published 01 September 2009|
This fall sees the release of the newest expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark. The Sea of Blood expansion is an advanced campaign, much like the popular Road to Legend expansion. While not compatible with Road to Legend, the dungeons and rumors can be seamlessly combined. Sea of Blood also features an updated and streamlined advanced campaign system.
Advanced campaigns feature the full hero party, much like a standard Descent game, but allows the party to keep their their items and skills between game sessions, through many encounters, as opposed to a one night experience. Heroes gain experience and items to aid them in their quest, yet they must take care. As they gain experience and level up, the Overlord gains power as well. Dread Lieutenants, enforcers of the Overlord's will, haunt the lands. The hero party must take care that these grim agents do not prevent them from reaching valuable training grounds, or even worse, raze cities to the ground. The campaign culminates in an epic battle with an avatar of the Overlord, deep in its lair.
Sea of Blood takes this campaign to the high seas. Hero parties venture forth around the Island of Torue Albes. As much a member of the party as any hero, their ship, the Revenge, is fully upgradable. Boasting four different types of rune cannons, magical figureheads, expanded decks, and a number of other options, players will have the chance to customize their ship just as they want it.
As the heroes sail to new dungeons to explore, they will be faced with battle on the briny deep! Enemy ships will assault them and attempt to both remove the pesky heroes as well as sink their ship. Boarding parties swing over the sides, while sharks swarm in the waters below. Cannon fire echoes across the waves as the heroes desperately fend off the invading force.
Once the heroes reach their destination, they must overcome the minions blocking their entrance into the cave. Fighting on the surface of the island they have discovered gives the heroes a new challenge, as the terrain is a mix of land and sea. Upon entering the cave, two dungeons stand between the heroes and their goal. All in all there are 30 new dungeons awaiting the heroes as well as 10 new island encounters, and each provides a distinct challenge.
The Overlord gains four new avatars to become – The Master of the Hunt, Captain Bones, the Mistress of Serpents, and the Count. Each avatar possesses unique abilities and upgrades. In addition to the new avatars, there are seven lieutenants to spread the will of the Overlord. Three of these are available for any avatar to enlist, and each avatar has their own lieutenant to call upon.
Descent: Sea of Blood is a full campaign that is able to incorporate every Descent expansion. Also included in the first print run, as identified by a sticker on the box, is a promotional figure. Nara the Fang will be included in every box of the first print run – there is no form to fill out, nothing to send in, just the figure and card in the box for your enjoyment.
Over the coming weeks, we will be highlighting each of the above additions. Make sure to check back and see what new terrors and adventures are coming to the lands of Descent!
Descent: Journeys in the Dark is a scenario-driven board game that takes a party of adventurers deep into the dungeons of Terrinoth for adventure, treasure, and glory, but beware: the Overlord and his minions stand poised to oppose any heroes foolhardy enough to enter the dungeon. Descent: Sea of Blood takes the game to the next level, introducing campaigns and long-term character development for both the heroes and the Overlord. Cross the dungeon's threshold and step into a world of adventure today!
I just started two RtL campaigns with my friends and, for the moment, we are having a lot of fun, so I'll probably buy this one. I find the addition of ships and sea battles great!
A question/proposal, has FFG considered combining Battle Lore and Descent? It would make possible a future campaign including castles and battles with Overlord invasion armies. Probably not enough economic sense to make an expansion box out of it, but it could be provided as a cheap/bonus PDF for the buyers of Battle Lore and Descent products.
And when I say four-square, I mean nine-square.
If you look at the map, there's some new markers at play. You can see palm tree markers (gray), and partially submerged rocks markers (blue) in the water. Of course there's the big, four-square cave entrance marker all the way to the left.
Aah... The dungeons and rumours can be used for RTL. That's what I wanted to know! A reason for me to buy this package, and Nara is great as well.
And ow yeah smart move on the rune cannons.... Would have hated to see gunpowder added to this world.
This does look awesome. Cap'n Jack Sparrow would definitely approve.
This looks Fantastic! I can't wait! I will have my local store order me a copy as soon as they can.
Is the "Frozen in Time" Plot going to be published in this box set? I ask becouse it has been almost two months since the second Frozen in Time plot card was published and they said it would be only a few weeks for the rest of them.
It's a rune pipe.
Glad Nara will be included, but was under the impression you could get it from the website in the future. Maybe you can get the Runebound card for Nara through the website? I sure hope so. And Rune Cannons sounds better than adding gun powder to Terrinoth. Why does a skeletal captain have a pipe?
This is really making me excited! Love the additions to the Advanced Campaign :)
And does this mean a sea-monster expansion coming soon? ;)
