“Here’s where the fun begins!”
The first of three standalone roleplaying systems, the Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook invites players to experience the thrills and adventures of life on the outskirts and the fringes of the Star Wars galaxy. Its 448 pages explain how to use the game’s narrative dice and Obligation, they allow you to build an astonishing array of compelling characters, and they offer everything you need to get started, including a complete adventure set on the Outer Rim planet, Formos. All together, the Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook is your introduction to a universe full of grim and gritty adventures, complete with bounty hunters, smugglers, crime lords, explorers, fringers, and thrilling drama!
Bound by Obligation
Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is the first of three epic roleplaying games, each taking place during the height of the Rebel Alliance’s struggle against the Galactic Empire. Each will feature a standalone core rulebook and a number of supplements that present the Star Wars galaxy from a unique point of view, but all three games will be fully compatible for use as a single game system.
After Edge of the Empire, the second core rulebook, Star Wars®: Age of Rebellion™ will allow the players to take the fight to the oppressive Galactic Empire as cunning spies, cocky pilots, and dedicated soldiers in the Rebel Alliance. Finally, in Star Wars®: Force and Destiny™, the players become figures of legend. Hunted by the Empire, they must stay alive, and more importantly, stay true to the ideals of their forebears—the fabled Jedi.
Each installment introduces unique mechanics that immerse players and GMs in its specific approach to life and adventure in the Star Wars universe. Because Edge of the Empire focuses on the fringes of society, the scum and villainy of the galaxy, and the explorers and colonists of the Outer Rim, it introduces far-reaching rules for Obligation. Just as Han Solo owed a debt to Jabba the Hutt when he first agreed to transport Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, each character in Edge of the Empire begins with a history and with debts to pay or a need to clear his conscience.
Obligation is what you owe – either to yourself or to others – and it provides a reason for your character to engage in high-stakes adventures. It binds your characters to figures from his past and grounds him in his adventures. You determine your character’s Obligation during character creation. Then, during your adventures, you can reduce your Obligation or take on more debt to gain quick rewards.
