–J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
The first Saga Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill allows players to accompany Bilbo Baggins and embark upon an adventure drawn from the pages of The Hobbit, the beloved fantasy classic by J.R.R. Tolkien.
A Very Good Tale
The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill introduces three new scenarios that recreate Bilbo’s journey through the first half of The Hobbit. Once you form your fellowship and depart the Shire, you’ll battle trolls, burgle treasures, grapple with goblins, and answer riddles in the dark. Throughout each scenario, you’ll recognize twists of fate carefully tailored to evoke the novel.
Once you journey out of the Shire, you’ll encounter terrible trolls in We Must Away, Ere Break of Day. It’s up to Bilbo to sneak past the trolls and rescue the Dwarves before they’re roasted or boiled.
Your heroes must then find their way past storms and Stone-giants in Over the Misty Mountains Grim. The stormy skies rumble with thunder and crackle with lightning, but the mountain caves in which your heroes can seek refuge may be just as deadly. Hordes of Goblins crowd the caverns along your passage through the Misty Mountains.
Things go from difficult to dire in the final scenario! Bilbo Baggins becomes split from the rest of his party in Dungeons Deep and Caverns Grim. Your heroes must simultaneously win a ferocious clash with Goblins and survive a deadly battle of wits with the cunning creature known as Gollum (The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill, 74).
An Unexpected Party
As much as the Saga Expansion’s three new scenarios immerse players in the magic of The Hobbit, its new player cards allow you to recall the vivid personalities of such notable figures as Thorin Oakenshield, Beorn (The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill, 5), and the mysterious, wandering wizard, Gandalf. With its extended cast of new heroes and allies, The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill allows fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game to pursue wholly new ways of building their fellowships.
Simultaneously, new rules allow players to discover and wield some extraordinary new items so important as to merit an entirely new card type. Treasures such as the famous Elven blades, Glamdring and Orcrist, cannot be cannot be included in players’ decks until they’ve first discovered them in a previous scenario. You have to work to find your treasures, though; you don’t gain them just for defeating a scenario. Thus, players hoping to gain the tremendous benefits of Sting (The Hobbit: Over Hill and Under Hill, 20) have incentive to explore scenarios in greater depth. And once you’ve found a treasure, it becomes a story element that carries forward into your play of the remaining scenarios. In this way, the scenarios from The Hobbit become something greater than the sum of their parts; they combine for a grand adventure!
