In the 21st century, the United States unveiled a military defense system that completely changed global politics. Through a series of satellites and powerful lasers, the U.S. gained a flawless defense against intercontinental missile attacks. The rest of the world feared that this defensive network might be used to launch an attack, and they united to demand that the U.S. dismantle it. A lengthy diplomatic stalemate gripped the globe. With the world at a crossroads, coalitions of nations were formed unlike any that had ever existed before. A plan was devised to destroy this perceived technological threat through military action. It involved attacking from three directions at once, for the nations of the world knew that every army dreads fighting a war on two fronts... and America was about to face three.

This updated version of Michael Gray's 1986 classic pits one player, in control of the beleaguered American forces, against up to three others, who team up to assault the U.S. on three fronts. Featuring beautifully crafted components (including over 300 detailed plastic figures), Fortress America thrusts players into a frightening geopolitical scenario in which diplomacy has failed, and World War III has begun.
When diplomacy fails
In Fortress America, the United States must defend itself from three deadly invading armies: the Asian People’s Alliance from the West, the Central American Federation from the South, and the Euro-Socialist Pact from the East. Players take on either the role of the United States, struggling to protect itself from foreign threats, or the role of one or more of the invading armies, fighting battle after battle to acquire important territories.
Fans of the 1986 Milton Bradley release will find designer Michael Gray's core experience essentially unchanged, while offering welcome enhancements over the original. I just realised that the tag-line on the new box cover is actually worse than that of the orginal editions. "One nation against the world", really?
Wow, I can't believe how this has blown up! I'm going to chime in with a few thoughts. I consider myself a typical American. I have a small house & a family, and my wife & I work honest jobs for honest pay. We are not wealthy & struggle some months to get by. I'm somewhat patriotic. I'm not ashamed of being an American, nor am I arrogant about it. I recognize that there are a lot of problems with this country & often do not agree with my government's decisions. I love the ideals that this country was founded on, that my ancestors have fought to protect. I recognize that many of these ideals are only given lip service in the modern age. I love America, but I hate the system that governs it. I'm a typical American, and I have no problem with America being shown in a bad light in a game. The only thing that bothers me about this is the real stuff. The comments about boycotting the game by those who liked either version of the fluff, and the ignorant comments for both the American nationalists & the America haters are what bother me here. America is not good or evil. Like any other country in the world, it's all grey areas & perspective. The fact that this has created all this controversy is just sad to me. Let's just enjoy our games.

They should have left America the bad guys to more accurately reflect reality.
I have to laugh at some of the people commenting on the fiction. You do realise a large portion of the world looks at us in that point of view? It's not like everywhere we go we are worshipped like angels and gods. Grow up people and realise that we aren't exactly the white knight nation you may want to think we are.
Can't wait to get a hold of this game though.
Not gonna get into the neo-political debate, just hoping the game is good.
As far as the big boxes go, I read somewhere that FFG's cost to print the boxes was in the $8-$10 range. That would add a lot to the cost. They mange to be putting a ton into these other boxes and I'm always happier not paying more.

Honestly, the core premise behind the game sounds interesting but the original flavor text... there are better ways to set up America as the villain or aggressor. That thing read like something a ten year old would put together or a writer would throw up as the proto-"get my thoughts together"-rough draft no one really needs to see.
Here on the other hand the MacGuffin has a basic specific description, we know what it is/why everyone is fighting, and the issues are more realistically gray.

Yes, they're moving away from the big boxes. They mentioned that at GenCon. It seems they want to make their games more affordable and try to avoid the high shipping costs of the big boxes.
