In the Ancient Relics cycle for Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, we explore how objects have souls and mysterious Relics acquire power.
These items, new and old, whether by elder science, preternatural forces, or through the sheer weight of humanity’s belief, gain arcane power as they disappear and reappear through history. Likewise, various questions about the cards in Call of Cthulhu gain power as they surface and cycle through multiple iterations. While the Ancient Relics cycle explores the souls in powerful objects, the new FAQ (pdf, 17.0MB) addresses the root of each powerful question for this Living Card Game, carrying the game through the ages and growing with each more powerful (and refined) iteration. A smaller, printer-friendly version of the FAQ is also available (pdf, 615KB).
A word from the designer
Greetings cultists, servitors, and investigators!
Gen Con 2011 and the Call of Cthulhu World Championships have come and gone, and that means it is time for a brand new FAQ. This version has only a few additions to the clarifications and errata section: The ability of Halflings of D’haz (Search for the Silver Key, 75) has been clarified to indicate that all additional wounds are assigned by the losing player one at a time, so you cannot stack all of them on a character that would have been killed by the first wound. The second ability of Canopic Jar (The Shifting Sands, 28) has received an errata; it is not a response but a passive ability that gives you the choice of triggering the attached character’s ability. The Definitions and Terms section has updated entries on “Printed,” “Cannot,” “Limit 1/Once,” “Reveal,” and “Redistribute” to help everyone better understand how the game uses these terms.
A major addition is a detailed timing structure showing the nested triggers of actions, disrupts, passives, forced responses, and responses. This will help clear up some of the subtler interactions between card effects and clarify when and how to properly play effects, a great boon to casual and competitive players alike.
I wish all the European players the best of luck as they prepare for their upcoming tournament in Liege, Belgium. I look forward to reading the tourney reports and seeing what mind-shattering decks they play.

Based on the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and his literary circle, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game takes two players deep into the Cthulhu Mythos where investigators clash with the Ancient Ones and Elder Gods for the fate of the world. The Living Card Game format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Asylum Pack expansions to the core game.
The FAQ update is extensive, just in time for the European CoC Championship in Belgium - thanks!
"Am I the only one that have problems in opening/downloading the printer-friendly versione of the FAQ??"
It worked fine for me (both before and after the update). Maybe you just tried at an unfortunate moment.
Am I the only one that have problems in opening/downloading the printer-friendly versione of the FAQ??
Hm... I'm guessing it is 2.0. The full print version is marked that way. I'm going to shoot someone over there an email.
[ADMIN: The title has been corrected.]
I like the new 'Gain control of attachments" rule. Twila's rule (and the catchall mechanic behind it) seems a bit wonky, but ok.... The exact timing rules are indeed welcome, and a lot to mull over... It's good to see such an extensive update!
Phew! Thanks for the update - just in time before the European Championship in Liege starts!
Now, let's see how many of my nagging questions have been added ;-)
Is the FAQ version actually 1.5 according to the actual FAQ or version 2.0 as indicated by the file name?
Canopic Jar now seems like a very interessting card that actually works. *grin*
No errata for the Initiate of Huang Hun? Or is there something hidden in the "new" timing structure?
Excellent, much appreciated!
Oooh very groovy! Especially the timing structure. Thank you very much, Damon.
