Another classic Asylum Pack in the Forgotten Lore cycle, Kingsport Dreams reintroduces three copies each of twenty cards, updating them to incorporate the most recent FAQ and to the better reflect the LCG format’s metagame, clarifying rules and card interactions.
Magic to madness
While sorcerers and cultists roam its streets, terrifying secrets lie beneath the surfaces and behind the closed doors of Kingsport. Kingsport Dreams offers players a tour of many of the more horrifying locations, including Neil’s Curiosity Shop (Kingsport Dreams, 22), a little nest of chaos at the end of the road. This location is indeed a curiosity and a gamble. In order to offer any real power, it relies upon your opponent to control a location with a triggered ability. But in those games when your opponent springs a location-based combination against you, Neil’s Curiosity Shop allows you to sample your own share of the fun. This gamble has better odds now than ever as Kingsport Dreams offers strange new vistas.
Even when your opponent doesn’t play a location, Neil’s Curiosity Shop is never truly dead weight. If nothing else, any card in Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game can always be used to build up one of your domains.
Dabbling in the dark arts
Kingsport’s stoic New England exterior conceals the darkness, perversion, and unnameable hideousness that few souls ever dream. Still, there are some who dabble in the dark arts, either to gain power or to learn defenses against the greater terrors of the Ancient Ones. Kingsport Dreams pushes the game toward the brink of madness as it reintroduces powerful sorcerers and spells.
Dreams in Limbo (Kingsport Dreams, 32) should excite fans of Yog-Sothoth. With it, the Lord of Time and Space can alter the very nature of story resolution. Yog players can avoid Combat struggles with combat-heavy Agency decks or protect any of their saner minions from the terrors of a Hastur deck. More importantly, Dreams in Limbo can prevent your opponents from gaining success tokens by winning Investigation struggles. This often proves the difference between having your opponent complete a story and holding him at bay one more turn. In an extreme situation, Dreams in Limbo can single-handedly shut down the powerful one-turn story win combination of The Locked Door (Whispers in the Dark, 10) and Open for Inspection (Core Set, 34).
Dreams in Limbo can also work aggressively in your favor as it can prevent your opponent from readying characters during Arcane struggles. This means fewer characters left to oppose your next story attempts. And because Dreams in Limbo is an event with a low cost, you can hold it safely in reserve to spring a nasty surprise on your opponent at that one crucial moment!
