Announcing Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition

Mennara is a world of magic, mystery, and adventure. In the deep places beneath the earth lurk terrifying monsters and foul villains, conspiring to plunge the land into shadow. The darkest parts of the forests hide things better forgotten, and in the mountains gather hordes of savage creatures whose only ambition is bloodshed. And behind all that evil and all that malice lurks the Overlord, the hidden threat that seeks to work his dark design across the realm. Fortunately, Mennara is also a world of heroes. Heroes clever of mind, strong of sword arm, and stout of heart. Heroes in many shapes and sizes, unlikely heroes of many races and creeds and from many walks of life. Heroes like you…

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition! This updated version of the classic board game of dungeon-delving adventure features a host of enhancements, including new heroes and monsters, streamlined rules, a class-based hero system, campaign play, and much more.

New heroes, new monsters... a whole new adventure

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition features eight never-before-seen heroes, ready to face off against nearly forty all-new monsters in nine distinct types. And with Second Edition’s enhanced experience system, you’ll have total control over your character’s growth and development. As you gain more experience throughout the included campaign, you’ll be able to periodically spend it on additional skills, adding to your hero’s available abilities. This, along with an innovative character selection system, lets you experience the dangers of Terrinoth like never before.

Updated rules will have you battling evil in minutes

With a range of enhancements designed to streamline the play experience, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition delivers a tense, satisfying game with minimal player downtime. Defense dice mitigate the tendency to “math out” attacks, while shorter quests with plenty of natural stopping points mean that even the busiest group can now fit Descent into a varied night of gaming. What’s more, since all necessary statistic, conditions, and effects are listed conveniently on their respective cards, you’ll be able to leave the rulebook in the box!

Your old favorites await

Want to transfer your favorite heroes and monsters from your existing Descent collection? The Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition Conversion Kit includes everything you need.

With Second Edition-compatible cards for every monster and hero ever produced (including promotional heroes!), this convenient conversion kit is an indispensable tool. So whether you want to bring your extensive Descent collection with you on new adventures, or you’ve got a favorite hero that you choose every time, we’ve got you covered.

Visit our Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition website to learn more, and keep checking back as we present previews. Then, in early 2012, prepare to embark on an all-new adventure!

@ Columbob

I think the key words in your Warhammer Quest summation are 'back in the day'. Yes it had great support...for a year...and then all support for it just stopped. The Warhammer Quest mag, while being very good and offering a great deal of expansion for the game, was almost impossible to get at any of my local game stores at the time (let alone the Citadel Journals) and the White Dwarfs didn't offer anywhere near as much material. As for the expansion packs, again they were hard to get here, were not really supported by the local stores I went to and when they were they disappeared faster than you could blink.

Guess I didn't explain myself too well in the original post. Just so I'm clear, I was commenting on my personal experience with the game, not some grand overall marketing strategy. I was just talking about why I lost interest in it. And as I didn't get all of the material 'back in the day' I had been looking for what I didn't have on and off over the years. Even though you can find the expansion stuff for sale on ebay, the prices are exorbitant. The new Descent seems to me to be a much more economical, and most likely better supported product. One that I can easily get my hands on. That's all I'm saying.

Anyhow, it's all moot now as I recently sold my Warhammer Quest stuff (for an exorbitant price no less...). And I'm still looking forward to checking out the new Descent. :)

I hope they have a variant system similar to warhammer quest. No OL.

Wait, it says 2 to 5 players. Darn....

The only thing I hope is that in the conversion set, they offer the minis from the earlier edition to go with the conversion cards. I'm really looking forward to 2E though!

What, do you want to pay $200++ for that conversion kit? There are around 50 heroes already available for first ed., not to mention many more monsters.

Any chance that extra sets of the new dice will also be available?

I own all the 1st edition expansions and am totally for a 2nd edition.  A lot of the expansions contradicted or created extenuating circumstances for a lot of the rules.  Having copies of all the rules plus the FAQ was a must since disagreements pop up all the time even though we play every week.  This gives FFG's a chance to rework and clarify the rules system for a cleaner game.  That is a big seller for me.  The expansion set is the icing on the cake since I've painted nearly all my figures to this point.

Another seller is campaign mode right off the start in the 2nd edition set.  We played Descent off and on until we got RTL's.  With campaign mode, it has become our preferred game.

And in the end, if 2nd edition doesn't deliver, I can still fall back to the 1st edition rules.  As convoluted as they are, there is still years of playability left in them.

FFG is also producing a conversion kit, with cards for every Descent hero and monster figure, including promo figures and ones from other games. So you can still use them in the new edition.

I love the new art. I hope it is closer to World of Warcraft art. I like the new bright colours on the box and on the tiles.
