Announcing the reprint of Kings of the Sea for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game
A Game of Thrones LCG | Published 11 January 2011

“For what is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger.”
-- Aeron Damphair, A Song of Ice and Fire, Volume II: A Clash of Kings

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the reprint of the Kings of the Sea expansion for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game!

Now, instead of having only one deck of cards and a resin House card, this incarnation of Kings of the Sea features three copies each of the 60 unique cards included in the original printing, but does not include the resin House card. (Look for "Revised Edition" on the front of the box to be sure you purchase the right version.)

With the reprint of Kings of the Sea, you will get a full play set without having to purchase multiple copies and you can start building challenging and competitive House Greyjoy decks right away.

Welcome to the Iron Isles

For those A Game of Thrones players who are just entering the game and for whom Kings of the Sea is an entirely new expansion, a brief introduction is in order.

In short, Kings of the Sea adds House Greyjoy as another playable House, alongside those included in the A Game of Thrones Core Set*, with its own particular set of strengths and strategies. Strengths native to House Greyjoy include strong Locations in the form of Warships, lots of Stealth and abilities based on unopposed challenges, and deck discard (or "raiding").

A Clash of Kings

For more detailed information on what is included with Kings of the Sea, we turn to A Game of Thrones' lead designer, Nate French**:

"In this product, you’ll find numerous King and Queen characters, some new Kingdom locations, and a spattering of Military Battle, Intrigue Gambit, and Power Struggle plot cards. Additional use for “crested” characters is also prevalent (particularly Holy and War), and a major black hole in the AGoT LCG™ metagame, a realistic check on powerful locations, has been confronted.

We wanted this expansion to have “something for everyone,” even if they’re not at all interested in House Greyjoy. Thus, each House gets at least 1 King or Queen, and the plot deck along with many of the neutral cards were selected as cards that could potentially be useful building blocks in the widest possible array of decks. So even a die-hard Lannister player should be able to find something of use in this set.

Kings of the Sea also includes an alternate multiplayer variant called “The Kingsmoot,” in which players compete for six distinctive Iron Islands titles in an attempt to hold all six of them simultaneously."

Coming this Spring, Kings of the Sea returns with more cards for expanded A Game of Thrones deck-building options. Board your longships and harness the fury of the Iron Fleet!

* Princes of the Sun adds House Martell as the sixth House of A Game of Thrones.

The Living Card Game format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Chapter Pack expansions to the core game.

It is wonderful that FFG is doing this.  it is also wonderfully sad the amount of money I've put in to get the cards from the original pack already >_<  Also, now I can't dominate as easily with these cards readily and more easily available to the masses!

Core set revision, anyone?

Boo-Hoo :(

@Zordren: Thanks for pointing that out! The box image already has the 'Revised Edition' label below the word 'Expasion'. I was so excited with the news that I didn't read the article carefully.
Regarding giving other older expansions the same treatment, I hope they do take this approach although I think they're doing this with KotS because there were lots of complaints when the expansion was first released.

Huzzah! This is great news, and I'm even willing to pick up an additional set at this point. Some really good cards here, and it does make Greyjoy far more accessible to new players.

Thanks you, FFG!

I Bought 2 copies of the original KotSea a few months ago after first getting in to the game. I don't regret it at all, and am thrilled that FFG made this decision - much MUCH better to help attract new players. And as a bonus, I'm sure that many of us might find buyers for our extra resin cards !

Who knows, I may even be tempted to buy the new KotSea, even though I already have the 2 sets and don't really NEED 3 X of certain cards to make a good deck. Would be a great and relatively economical way to finally get to play "Kingsmoot", which looks like a lot of fun! (Yeah I know you could do that with houses other than Greyjoy...)

I guess we could ASSUME that PotS might get the same treatment at some point in the future???

@Gerson:  According to the article above, the new one will be labeled as "revised edition".  Even without that, simply looking at the back of the box should be enough, as I would ASSUME that there won't be a pic of the resin card, and it certainly shouldn't be included on the new, revised edition "contents".

Bravo, FFG!  It was impossible to sell AGoT to newer players with 1x KotS:

New Guy: Oh, Kingdom of Shadows; that's cool.  What chapter pack is it in?

Me: It's in the Greyjoy expansion box...

New Guy: Oh, really?

Me: Yeah...(blah old system 1x, $30 x 3 = $90, ONLY ~$60 online!!!, THREE House Resin Cards!!!, etc. blah)

New Guy: Yeah...that's dumb.

Me: I know :(

Cool, now I can pick up a second copy.

As a new player that does not own Kings Of the Sea, this is great news!
I have one question though, will there be a way to tell from the box which edition is the new one ?
