Mystery attracts mystery. Ever since the wide appearance of my name as a performer of unexplained feats, I have encountered strange narratives and events which my calling has led people to link with my interests and activities.

High skill and lots of icons are handy to compete in struggles and wins you stories. But most of the time you’ll be picking a character based on what it says in their text box. A good ability is worth more than a thousand icons. Take Victoria Glasser (Core Set, F82). Not only is she a better Nightmares! (Twilight Horror, F10) but she also hangs around to help out your team. The downside is that she’s unique and once she is around, you can’t reuse the ability. That’s where Victoria's Protégé (Search for the Silver Key, F69) comes in.

The Syndicate is king in these come-into-play abilities though. The Core Set alone has Syndicate Liaison (Core Set, F68), Hard Case (Core Set, F69) and Extortionist (Core Set, F71). This trend is continued with Demented Caretaker (Ancient Horrors, F8). But there is always room for more, right?

The upcoming The Twilight Beckons asylum pack has something that can keep the exhaustion flowing. Small Time Magician (The Twilight Beckons, F17) does for your criminals what the protégé does for victory: Resetting them to your hand so you can use them again.

Your exhaustion team aren’t the only criminals that benefit from this avenue of escape: Clover Club Executive (Sleep of the Dead, F85) can be very disruptive, and forcing players to keep their hand size low is a good way to goad them into making mistakes.

There are not a lot of criminals outside of The Syndicate and the few that are don’t have much synergy with the Magician. Hired Muscle (Core Set, F8) does, however, due to his toughness keyword. When the muscle takes a wound, Small Time Magician can help erase it. This goes for all your criminals when you apply some Dutch Courage (Core Set, F73).

…And now you don’t…

…As it’s almost the Yuletide, that men call Christmas though they know in their hearts it is older than Bethlehem and Babylon, older than Memphis and mankind. Consequences are that the tome of spoilers will be closed for festivities and other events next week. And then, slowly, we close in on a bigger Magician.

But for now, we’ll always have an escape route, pulling a Zoog out of their hat.

Based on the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and his literary circle, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game takes two players deep into the Cthulhu Mythos where investigators clash with the Ancient Ones and Elder Gods for the fate of the world. The Living Card Game format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Asylum Pack expansions to the core game.
