Welcome to this week’s installment of the Warhammer: Invasion “card of the week” series. With yesterday’s release of Tooth and Claw (the third Battle Pack in The Corruption Cycle), Warhammer: Invasion decks around the world received a major boost. Now, however, we’ll look forward to what’s coming in the months ahead!
The release of Assault on Ulthuan will bring a long-awaited viability to both High Elf and Dark Elf decks, as well as a score of options for players of other factions. Additionally, later this month, The Deathmaster’s Dance will hit shelves... and with it comes a particularly nasty trick for the Dark Elves. Today we’ll spotlight two upcoming Dark Elf cards (one from Assault on Ulthuan and one from The Deathmaster’s Dance), and we’ll begin to appreciate one fundamental strategy of the Dark Elves: hand reduction.
While other factions certainly have units with the “scout” ability (which, after surviving combat, makes an opponent randomly discard a card from his hand), in the hands of the Dark Elves it’s an especially damaging ability, since it compounds their already frustrating hand reduction abilities. Shades, a Dark Elf Card making its debut in Assault on Ulthuan, is a relatively inexpensive unit that can make a welcome addition to such a deck.
For another example of frustrating hand reduction, check out Caught The Scent, which will hit shelves later this month in the fourth Battle Pack, The Deathmaster’s Dance. With the ability to not only gain a glimpse of your opponent’s hand, but discard a card of your choice, Caught the Scent will have your opponent cursing the Dark Elves under his breath as you toss away a pesky Waaagh! or Judgement of Verena. But remember, when you get your chance to look at your opponent’s hand, don’t get so excited about the discard that you forget to take a mental note of what else might be coming your way!

what's up with the Caught the Scent card art? it's the same as Cold One Riders...kinda lame to reuse that IMO
scent is just a 1 for 1. its a good 1 for 1 at cost 2...
If it wasn't your own turn only you could destroy an opponent by always getting a chance to remove cards he just drew before getting a chance to even choose to play them. Not something that is particularly good for the health of the game. It is plenty powerful as is.
I'm really impressed with the dark elves so far. They seems to have the power to invoke real pain... something I currently miss in chaos.
Shade is a very effective 2 cost unit. I have a problem with Caught The Scent : own turn only... but it's still very valuable.
Rashley - There was a suggestion in the flavour text last week that the Dark Elves can take prisoners and sacrifice them. I think this might explain all those "return it to its owners hand" sections on the newer cards, I think this is how the Dark Elves might be different from the rest. As for high Elves, healing and damage cancelling seems to be the order of the day, probably with sniping units, maybe in all three zones...

I also love that the Skaven will eventually (by the release of the final Corruption Cycle pack) be a totally, near-viable, if not downright viable deck of their own, also. :D
Been looking forward to the Drak Elves.
I have to say that the Ulthuan expansion is really what I have been waiting most for. 2 extra playable factions will bring so much more variety to the game. The few hints we are getting seem to suggest 2 completely new strategies to experiment with. The Battle Packs are OK - only 2 have reached the stores in the UK to date - but tended to just reinforce the general themes of the 4 original factions. Ie Dwarf = Toughness/Hit Points. Empire = Manouvering/Counterstrike. Orcs = Sheer brute strength. Chaos = Corruption/Strike when they are down. What will the Elf factions use? I am guessing:- High = Keep going with healing and kill with kindness. Dark = Mess them up in many nasty ways. Can't wait!!!
Dark Elves will be tough. Can't wait.
I love the fact that the Elves will soon become their own forces to be reckoned with instead of just allies. This next big box set is going to make for some very interesting games I think.
