Gears of War™: The Board Game, designed by Corey Konieczka, is based on the wildly popular third-person shooter by Epic Games. One to four players take on the roles of COG soldiers cooperating to destroy the Locust horde, and must work together to complete missions against an ingeniously challenging and varied game system. Roadie Run into cover, spray your enemy with blind fire, or rip him in half with your Lancer’s chainsaw!
Work together or die alone
As a fully cooperative experience, Gears of War: The Board Game pits you and up to three friends against a deviously clever game system (you can even face the action alone with solo rules). Choose one of seven randomly constructed missions, and support your fellow COGs as your team engages an unflinching enemy in furious, white-knuckle firefights! As the Locust horde pours from its subterranean lair, you’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by hostile forces and cut off from your objective. Only through teamwork and communication will you gain a tactical advantage, completing your mission and striking a blow for humanity.
Highly trained tacticians and experts in a wide range of weapons, COGs have a number of tricks at their disposal, represented by a hand of Order cards. Playing these cards on your turn allows you to pull off spectacular moves; lay down suppressing fire, take quick cover, or lend a hand to another COG. But be careful – your hand size also represents your health. If you’re forced to discard an Order but have none to lose, you’ll drop to the ground and “Bleed Out,” where you must crawl helplessly until a teammate can come to your rescue.
You’ll need every soldier you can get if you hope to send the Locust horde back to their holes. Leave no man behind!
A cunning enemy that adapts to your moves
Each mission means a new combination of Locust enemies, and the highly adaptable AI system in Gears of War: The Board Game gives each type of foe an eerily realistic pattern of behavior. Berserkers, for example, will tend to charge into areas where players have clustered together, thrashing wildly to inflict maximum damage. The more tactically savvy Boomer, on the other hand, chooses long-distance targets at which to lob its highly destructive grenades. And while the simple-minded Ticker rushes toward its enemies to explode at their feet, the clever Kantus will revive his fallen comrades, returning them to the fight.
To keep the nonstop action at a fevered pitch, each player draws a Locust AI card at the end of his turn. These brutal events drive the actions of one or more Locust figures, and they are the chief means by which the devious AI in Gears of War: The Board Game opposes your every effort to complete the mission at hand.
Tense tactical combat
Combat in Gears of War: The Board Game is quick and deadly, and victory is often awarded to whomever can grab cover first. Scattered across each amazingly detailed level are locations where COGs and Locusts alike can “Take Cover,” adding more custom 6-sided defense dice to their roll. So when the bullets start flying, don’t be left out in the open.
Speaking of bullets, staying alive against the Locust horde takes the right weapons. Luckily, with nearly 40 weapon cards with which to equip your team, you’ll have plenty of options. From the reliability of the standard issue Lancer Assault Rifle to the tremendous stopping power of the Gnasher Shotgun, you’ll have the equipment at your disposal to get the job done... as long as you don’t run out of bullets.
Each weapon has a limited number of clips, and while this is easy enough to preserve when making standard attacks, players can also choose to spray their targets in a reckless hail of gunfire. These “Overkill Attacks” result in significantly more powerful strikes, but they also spend precious ammunition. So go ahead and unload into a charging Berserker, or toss a Bolo Grenade to seal an Emergence Hole and prevent enemy spawning... just remember, you never know when you’ll get a chance to reload.
Seven merciless missions
While the seven included missions in Gears of War: The Board Game present a variety of challenging objectives, each one offers significant replayability on its own. A mission’s map setup is randomized every time, and this, along with a random distribution of recoverable weapons and four distinct COG characters to play, means that no two games of Gears of War: The Board Game will ever be alike.
From scouting a path for future offensives to breaching the underground stronghold of the Locusts, your objectives will take cooperation and determination to complete. But if you want to test your mettle in the most challenging mission available, face wave after wave of incoming Locusts in the merciless Horde Mode! With adjustable degrees of difficulty for the truly insane, this relentless onslaught doesn’t stop until one side is utterly obliterated.
The enemy is everywhere, and they’ll stop at nothing short of the total destruction of civilization. You are humanity’s last hope. Gather your team and stand together against the Locust horde!
