Matt Ward is a serious blight on 40k canon so I tend to ignore any fluff he writes (his rabid hate of SoB and love of Ultramarines isn't a well kept secret either). Grimderp is just bad, though. Grimdark for the sake of grimdark while keeping a straight face is just silly and forced. It doesn't make the setting more "cool" or interesting, just dumber.
Nah, the Bloodtide story is ancient. It can trace its roots back to the Rogue Trader era. The "Matt Ward Original" stories are the OTT Mary Sue ones like Draigo. Oh, and wardis in fact a closet SoB fanboy. He wrote the SoB fluff in the WD update, and if you read through it, you can see that the SoB is super-awesome there. And even in the other stoires, the SoB either die as true heroes or at least Ward gives them the credit.
