...and my boys and I after playing last night were wondering: how come the favors for the groups count so much in the end? Is it because your invesitgator agrees to keep quiet & they owe you, or is there something else?

Theme-wise, I'd agree. If the conspiracy links a particular group to the murder, then all those favor tokens go up considerably in value.
