1 Handed or 2 Handed?
Published on 25 December 2012 - 16:06:40

Hey All

I have some quiries that I thought of when reading the 'Dual Weilding?' Topic

Is there a section within the Beginners Game Rulebook, Beta Rulebook, or Errata that states which weapons can be used 1 handed and which can be used 2 handed or even both?

and/or

How can you tell if a weapon from the Beginners Game Rulebook is 1 handed or 2 handed?

Like with the ranged weapons it is easy to deduce which is which because of the skill needed (1 handed is Ranged [Light], 2 handed is Ranged [Heavy]) but how can you tell which Melee or Brawl weapons (besides the obvious ones like Brass Knuckles and Knives) are 1 handed or 2 handed or can be used one or the other.

Example: Lohhrick the Wookie Hired Gun has a Vibro-Axe and on his Character Folio's cover it can be seen pictured with him and he is wielding it 1 handed. (This indicates to me that it is both 1 handed and 2 handed)

There's nothing stopping you from using a 1 handed weapon two handed, it just doesn't give you a mechanical difference like you find in popular d20 games, at least I don't remember seeing it in either the Beginner's Game or the Beta. When it comes to things that are 2-handed I think common sense is all that's needed.

It's like how this game has no difference for using a weapon in your "off-hand". This is more of a cinematic game so it gives the players the benefit of the doubt in that regard.

I would be tempted to say "Ranged (light)" is one-handed, and "Range (Heavy)" is two-handed. As for the melee weapons, I don't know. Maybe it's something they'll add for the complete game in Spring 2013, but for now, that's all we got! ;)

The official word on what is 1-handed and what is 2-handed is actually tied up with the final word on dual-wielding, and the final update to the Beta Test:

The change is on Page 9 of the Final Week Update document for the Beta (which is available to anyone over on the news page for the Beta game)

" When attacking with two weapons, the character must be wielding two weapons that can each be reasonably held and wielded in one hand. Generally these weapons are Ranged (light) weapons--generally pistols and grenades--and one-handed melee or brawl weapons. If it's unclear whether or not a weapon can be wielded one-handed, the GM makes the final determination as to if it can be used. "

So indeed one-handed weapons simply include ranged (light) weapons and some melee and brawl weapons. It then follows that two-handed weapons include ranged (heavy) weapons and some melee weapons as well. And the last sentence makes it clear that this is really up to the GM if it's not apparent from the description.

This is actually covered in the beginner's book. P.24 states that ranged (heavy) deals with 2-handed weapons, while ranged (light) with 1-handed weapons.

I hope they dont complicate the system by adding rules for dual weilding and double handed melee weapons like the d20 system.

may the force be with you

There seems to be rules for dual weilding, but it's not really complicated. You select your main weapon, roll for the worst of the weapons (adding 1 difficulty dice), and you deal damage for the main weapon. IF you have an advantage, you also deal damage for the secondary weapon.

We've played one game, and one of my player wanted to try it out. He never was able to actually use the second damage set….
