I think just two copies for me, and I can pick up a 3rd later if I feel like I need to and if I like the game enough. Two, then play, then decide.

1 box at first, depending on the prevalence of x3 cards. I'll only purchase a second box if real x3 synergies make themselves apparent (e.g. if I gravitate to playing as Noise and all the viruses are x2 in the box, etc).
The third will come if I get into tournament play, but I'd rather fill in my x3 blanks with pack cycle cards.

Two tends to be the magic number for core sets. And did FFG suddenly conjure up a legitimate tournament scene for their LCGs, or is this just for cons?

AGoT and CoC have had "legitimate tournament scenes" for a while now. I think Warhammer as well, although I can't speak to that.
Warhammer DID have a legitimate tournament scene, but in the UK it's now completely dead. Can't speak for the rest of the world.
