The Dead Marshes (Solo Player Living Tournament)
Published on 24 February 2012 - 12:58:19

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking!

Scenario: The Dead Marshes
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success.

Posting Your Results (Required Information):

Decklist: Three Rangers

My first intent was tough, not that I've been in serious troubles, but it felt difficult to progress with all these escape test and all. I thought I had to restart to 1B at the end, but I had luck with the cards dealt for the final escape test.

The second one was easy, Gandalf visited me a lot, so I hadn't much problems to take it down.

The third was the easiest one, Celebrian's Stone and Faramir in my hand, made it very fast.

Greetings.

I have a very good starting hand: Steward of Gondor, Attonishing Speed and We do not sleep; I run the fist scenario in 2 rounds, failing on escape tests on both of them – but with We do Not Sleep in the last round, I risky it. West Traveler Road showed in the last round, as well a timely drawed Celebrian Stone. With everyone on escape test, even buying 5 cards to Gollum (a treachery on last round make me put a token on Gollum), raise the escape to 7… but my 8 has get him for his foot, but I get the little crump. A very good result IMO, is my first and best on this scenario up to now.

Game 2 Result: Loss

To be honest, Gollum was shuffled on the deck, and after 6 rounds I give up. Man, if you have him suffled, it is a sure boring game. Need to watch on the escape tests…

Game 3 Result: 52
Final Threat Level: 22
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 3
Well, this one is better; I get a Galad Greets, and a lot of allies. Whit this was very difficult for the little creep to escape. He goes with 0 tokens, so I captured him immediately. I will play 2 more in a row to make this result better, but I will consider this as well. My best result so far…

This put me in second place even with a loss, so I am confident to get the first place.

My decklist
2 Northern Tracker
1 Unexpected Courage
2 Hasty Stroke
2 The Galadhrim's Greeting

A Hill Troll dampers my threath, and I need to wait 1 turn more to play We do Not Sleep. This is a very good card or this sacenario, and even with 7 escape, Gollum is held firm by the man of Rohan… not a good result, IMO, but it is ok. Escort of Edoras is great to make escape tests, and I never thinked them like that. Only be aware to not put them on quests with We do Not Sleep, lol

Game 3 Result: 59
Final Threat Level: 19
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4
This time Gandalf showed up 2 times, reducing threath. Considering that I have a Steward of Gondor on initial hand, was a very good game. I have some unluck as the staging area has a Marsh Adder and Hearth of Marshes, but I managed to get him. Gollum drawed 2 cards for a total of 3 escape, but I managed to get 4 (it is very risky put only 2 Escort of Edoras, but I was ok if my bet is bad enough…)

The deck is the same used in the last post. The second game is not so good, but I am the first, for the first time !!!!

Wow, that was a quick one. Got great starting hands in my first two games. One was due to a mulligan. So I had PoL and Escort from Edoras and Westfold Horsebraker. The encounters were quite normal. Had 1 token on Gollum in game one and 2 tokens on him in game two.

Games 3three was somewhat special.....I did get an Escort, but no other cards I was used to. Instead I had 2 Good Meals and Astonishing Speed in my hand. My encountes in round one were a setup Warg and a Marshworm. But with the escort and AS I had 17 willpower. Round 2 gave me UC on Eowyn......done.

Ok, I have to admit that I don't understand this. How on earth can you beat Dead Marshes in an only single round (and three times in a row)? You will need at the very least 2 rounds... one for quest step 1B and another one for 1B. If there is a way to complete both quest steps in the same round I would be glad to know.

Maybe am I doing something wrong? Just wanted to understand this, please don't take me as criticism. After your results in all this bunch of quests you are my idol .

Greetings.

It took me 2 rounds, but you don´t count round 2 for scoring purpose as you only count completed rounds.
If you did make that mistake in all your entries, you have some better results in all your games.

muemakan is right, you tally only those rounds in which you raise your threat counter.

Now I gave Dead Marshes a try using a secrecy deck. Obviously this turned out to be problematic, as I was vulnerable to escape test during the first couple of rounds. In every second game Gollum escaped, every fourth game was a loss (and I lost mostly after I achieved an excellent score in the game before).

Still I managed to get a somehwat decent result:

Heroes: Dáin Ironfoot, Bifur

Game 1 Result: 47
Final Threat Level: 17
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Game 2 Result: 153
Final Threat Level: 23
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero:0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 13

Game 3 Result: 149
Final Threat Level: 13
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 0
Victory Points Earned: 14
Number of Rounds Completed: 15

In my first game I had Sneak/Gandalf, Steward of Gondor and Bofur in round 1 via Timely Aid plus harnless encounters. In the other two games Gollum escaped my fellowship during stage 2B. In game 2 I had everything prepared to win the game next round, Gollum having already 6 tokens on him. Then I made the escape test with 4 WP and got "The Lights of the Dead".

Ok, now I totally missed that. I always count all the rounds I had, completed or not. I checked in the FAQ 1.2 and found in page 5: "Players tally each round for their score at the end of the refresh phase." Thanks for noticing me about that.

So, a great point to take care from now on. And about my results, how this affect them, juicebox? Are they invalidated, corrected, stay as they are?

Greetings.

Perhaps you should just post them anew with the improved results to spare Juicy some work.

Posting Your Results (Optional Information): Played with 1 Core set and all of the adventure packs up to Road to Rivendell.  Key was getting Unexpected Courage on Eowyn so she could quest as well as do an escape test so I think playing with 3 core sets would have helped a lot.
