Passage Through Mirkwood (Solo Player Living Tournament)
Published on 22 February 2012 - 12:15:18

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking!

Scenario: Passage Through Mirkwood
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success.

Let's start things up!

Heroes: Dain Ironfoot, Eleanor, Eowyn

Game 1 Result: 77
Final Threat Level: 26
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 1
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 5
Quest 3 was Beorn's Path

Game 2 Result: 82
Final Threat Level: 23
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0

Game 3 Result: 64
Final Threat Level: 21
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 3
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4
Quest 3 was Beorn's Path

Decklist (Cardpool is 3 x Core Set, all Shadows of Mirkwood AP, KD)

Solo - Miner

Hero (3)
Dain Ironfoot (RtM) x1
Eleanor (Core) x1
Eowyn (Core) x1

Ally (18)
Gandalf (Core) x3
Gildor Inglorion (THoEM) x3
Landroval (AJtR) x3
Radagast (AJtR) x3
Zigil Miner (KD) x3
Northern Tracker (Core) x3

Attachment (5)
Narvi's Belt (KD) x2
Ancient Mathom (AJtR) x3

Event (27)
A Test of Will (Core) x3

Grim Resolve (Core) x3
Sneak Attack (Core) x3
Stand and Fight (Core) x3
We Do Not Sleep (TDM) x3
Will of the West (Core) x3

Not much to tell. I often used a Sneaked Gandalf to kill the initial Forest Spider instead of drawing or reducing threat. I'm not sure how consistent that deck is gonna prove against the other quests, but it's one of the staples I'll keep trying out in this Living Tournament format.

Cardpool was a single Core Set, all the Mirkwood APs and Khazad Dum.
Drawing a second Forest Spider on turn 1 actually turns out to be pretty evil. Frodo had to take quite a few heavy hits, hence the high threat in each game. At least I managed to win on the third turn in game 3. ;)

Something to build on... geez, my second game was horribly unlucky.

Hummerhorns shadow effect left undefended = total disaster.

And so, my first stab at a Living Tournament is a humble stab.

Seems like the dwarfs can make the passage. Thalin and his tactics pals are not of much help though, so I will likely replace him with either Dwalin or Glóin.

Don't leave the Path!

First two approaches were ok, but I got Ungoliant's Spawn (first game it came in round 2!) which delayed my shortcut on Beorn's Path a bit. In the third try I went all risk and was rewarded. Got Celebrían's Stone and the Record Keeper in round 1. Later I could play Gandalf 3x (2x normal and 1x sneak attack). I missed killing Ungoliant's Spawn by 1 point in round 3., otherwise my score would have been even better.

In game 2 I played Erebor Hammersmith and  sneaked Gandalf durning the quest phase. I used his ability to kill the Spider before questing. Everyone beside Dáin was committed to the quest. Encounter were the Hummerhorns, so I got immediatly to stage 2B. The Old Forest Road remained in the staging area. There I got Great Forest Web. In round 3 I played Gandalf an killed the Hummerhorns with his ability. My last resource was spent for Erebor Record Keeper. 3B was Beorn's Path, so unsurprisingly I sent (almost) everyone questing. Got the Necromancer's Reach and would have finished the scenario right then if I had not played it safe an kept Gandalf ready for a probable fight. Of course I had no problem to finish the scenario in round 4 (encounter were Dol Guldur Orcs).

Gave this another go.

Heroes: Eowyn, Gimli, Legolas

Game 1 Result: 81

Final Threat: 28
Threat Cost of Dead Heroes: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 3
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 5

Game 2 Result: 65

Final Threat: 23
Threat Cost of Dead Heroes: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Game 3 Result: 75

Final Threat: 33
Threat Cost of Dead Heroes: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Comments: I lucked out and got Beorn's Path all three games. In the second game, I drew a treachery right away (hence the 2 damage tokens on Eowyn and Gimli), engaged the spider and used feint on it, then killed it with Gimli and Legolas. Second turn I pulled Gandalf, lowered my threat and quested with everyone but Legolas. Fourth turn Gandalf made another appearance, lowered my threat some more, then Eowyn and Gimli finished it the next turn.

Third game started out similar to the second one. I pulled a location, used feint on the forest spider then killed it with Legolas and Gimli (Legolas had a blade of gondolin on him). Gandalf didn't make an appearance unfortunately, but I had some meat shields out so I was comfortable questing with Gimli and Eowyn while my Gondorian spearman and Veteran Axehands defended and Legolas attacked.
