Miniature
Published on 19 January 2012 - 20:46:40

I was wondering, for the ones who haven't bought (or keept in my case) the first descent, and willing to use older miniatures.

Will there be a miniature package?
or is it obliged to buy all the ancien descent, knowing almost half of the component will be unusefull (cards, tiles, characters sheets, tokens ... ?)

Hope figure will be sold appart.

Am i dreaming ?

They haven't made any official announcements to that effect, although looking at all the Lovecraft monsters and investigators being sold separately, I'd say it's not impossible.  They might even make pre-painted sets available.

You can expect to pay through the nose if they actually do this, of course.

You're not "obliged" to buy anything.  You don't NEED the old 1e figures to play 2e.  The base game comes with more than enough heroes and monsters to play, and there will surely be more in expansions to come (I figure it's a fairly safe bet 2e will have at least a couple of those.)

If you're a compulsive collector who feels like he MUST own everything if he's going to own anything, that's your problem, not FFG's.  (I say this as a reasonably compulsive collector myself, mind you.)  Anyway, I'm reasonably certain there will be fan-made variants to use the rest of the 1e stuff in 2e games, even if FFG doesn't convert it themselves.

I don't think making bag of figure is so expensive.

All off them would have been done for disapering, so ?

Running off a series of plastic miniatures is a fairly expensive process, from what I understand.  (Especially pre-paints.)  It may be true that making the mould is the most expensive element, and those are already done, but the material still isn't cheap.  Plastic is an extract from crude oil, after all, and one look at the gas pumps should tell you oil ain't cheap.

When the minis are packaged in a board game, the cost gets absorbed into the whole product.  Paying $80-$100 for a gigantic board game may not seem like much when there's all these cardboard fiddly bits to go along with the plastic elements, but that doesn't mean the cost is evenly divided among the components.

Thus, when minis are packaged individually, they seem more expensive than they "should be," when really the price is right about spot on.

The Arkham Investigators are nearly $100.00 for a set of 48 figures (pre-painted, mind you.)  There were a total of 38 heroes in Descent and expansions.

Plus 6 from DQ

Plus 4 promos

Plus 6 from Zanaga (assuming they make the set truly complete)

That's 54 figures.  Now, I don't know exactly how much pre-painting adds to the production costs, but you're probably still looking at $60-$80 for a full set of unpainted 1e heroes.  And that's not even counting the LTs.

The 6 heroes in Mist of Zanaga were available with the stats for Descent?

No, he was posing a hypothetical scenario there.

No, that's why I added "assuming they make the set truly complete."  Even without those 6 figures (total of 48 in the set), my point stands:  it isn't impossible (given that they are marketing similar miniature packs for other games), but it wouldn't be cheap if they did it for Descent.

plastic not the only solution.

there's metal, and thurthermore : resin. So running out is not a good idea i think.

more if you think the second edition will have new molds, figures, and all.

so, why not again ?

It all comes down to one thing: will FFG get any profits from it?

I wouldnt rule out the possibility of those minis coming back into packages, specially if Descent 2nd sells well (which I think has a good possibility)

I never said they wouldn't do it.  I just said it would be expensive if they did.

They need to be wary of this though.  If someone buys the conversion kit, then ends up duplicating on some of this stuff because they are released as part of another expansion later on down the line, they'll be (rightly so) a little miffed...

The only true way of doing this is to make two kits:

Conversion kit as written now

Conversion kit containing all of the above PLUS all plastics - this would retail at the $200 mark I reckon  :)

I dont see any problem, if they sell the convertion kit, and later, a monster kit (monster plus cards), specially if they are releasing packages of the first edition monsters.

The convertion kit is mainly for people who already have first edition, I have all expansions so I will surely buy that.

If they end up mixing and matching, it would be better if they package them according to first edition expansions, so people could buy the monsters+cards they missed on first edition...

well it's been a few months since the release of both the 2nd ed base and Conversion Kits.

Any news on "monster packs?"

Ive read most threads considering those minis and in all of them it seems the manufacturing costs are greatly exaggerated. My son can buy a plastic bag of 20-30 single coloured plastic animals or dinosaurs for about 2 euro. What's that, like 3 dollars? and those are pretty much the same level of detail as the figures I got in descent.

Well, produce proxies at that price and I will buy them.
