Tips for a Demo
Published on 09 December 2009 - 12:59:58

I picked up the game today and I am going to be running a demo at my FLGS and I was wondering if anyone has ran a demo yet and had any tips. I've never given a demo of an RPG and I'm not sure exactly how to do it. I was thinking about running the adventure they put up on the site and do character creation.

I'm just a little bit worried since with the new systems that it might take awhile for the players to get it and when I haven't even ran it for my own group, it might just be a slow moving game.

  • Read through the rules (of course) - run the 'Day Late and a Shilling Short' demo scenario
  • Read some of the demo experiences in the Emperor's Decree section.
  • Download my quick ref sheet (in my sig).
  • Download this screen as well.
  • Remember that this is a very open game. It's tailor made to allow GMs to adjudicate as the situation requires.
  • If you're not sure about something, make a call and move on. Don't spend a lot of time looking for rules that aren't there.
  • Never let them see you sweat.
  • And last, but not least. Have fun. Don't let anything get in the way of that and your players will have a blast.

I'll add to remind and reward players for roleplaying.  It can be easy for players to get themselves too concentrated on the new stuff like cards.  Remind them that roleplaying and describing actions gets rewarded ... then give them [W] Fortune die to a check for doing so.  I found that makes the game more fun, and less "work" for the players.

If a player rolls his eyes at one of your decisions, feel free to describe a nurgling bursting out from his character's eyeball.
