May be this was answered before and I didn't find it.
At the time I have neither the LCG nor the boardgame. My question about those games is: May I play the cardgame in connection with the boardgame, or are both standalone games, which can't be connected.

They are completely separate games. They do not connect in any way. Well, except that some of the artwork is the same/similar.

The boardgame is a regular Boardgame, you dont need to know anything about the world and the books.
The cards are a completely different game as Ktom already said, it was originally a CCG but in last few months it has changed to LCG, so the coreset might look like a boardgame a little but it is not. It just contains some fancy stuff but the cards are the most important thing.
