Regarding expansions: They are not a requirement. You can get a lot of quality gaming out of the Core Set. But the expansions allow you to inject the game with new possibilities and strategies. If you ever grow tired of playing with the Core Set cards, getting a couple of battle packs or a deluxe expansion or two can turn it into almost a whole new game. They also increase your card pool and options so you can construct decks yourself, pick the cards you think go well together, instead of pretty much having to use all the cards of a certain faction the Core Set contains. For almost every long time player, constructing decks and playing with them holds the greatest appeal. Depending on your preferences, you might find certain expansions more useful than others, but they are all worth it for these reasons.
