I had a few goals creating this investigator:

1. Make an appropriate translation of the character to AH

2. Make his abilities simple and elegant

3. Only require the base set so anyone can print and play him

4. Balance

I have yet to play test this version of him but this one seems pretty good. Chances are he'll still need some balancing, I have some concerns right now regarding Summon. As a monster sweeper he'll probably gain trophies quickly so I'm thinking of bumping the cost up to 3 trophies but 2 seems fine for now.

Going to toot my horn, I really like how his Reliable Source ability is looking. Of course that  view can change with playtesting but I like the utility of spending a trophy so you don't have to walk to a location to pick up the clues there. It really fits character since he solves cases (he's also a detective) with demonic aid.

Disregard the state of Raidou in that post, he still needs some work. Sadly, I haven't found a way to edit or delete posts so I'll just say the changes I've made are to his fixed possessions and random ones. $5, .38, enchant weapon, random common item, monster trophy and 1 skill. Trying to figure out a fix to Summon so it works differently against the Dunwich horror. Specifically saying it doesn't work against the Dunwich horror could be a fix but I'm starting to think the ability might be too strong. Need to playtest some more.

I think your best fix would be changing the wording to "Spend 2 monster trophies to add 1 success to a combat check"

Most of the other stuff seems fine, though I'd probably also limit the monster trophies for clues in a location to only being able to target clues on your current expansion, and not able to be used in the Other World.

"Gensokyo Horror"? Link please? Sounds neat.

Shining Aquas: these are some really neat investigators and mechanics. Some of them are quite powerful, or have quite powerful items (that Tangle of Thorns spell is just epically powerful, for instance). Love the idea on Zappa, that's just cool. Your previous set was also awesome. Please, do post the rest of your stuff, I'm loving what we've seen so far.

Alright, sorry for the lack of posts, there were things that needed doing.

Anyways, here's a special bundle for ya.  A single investigator with multiple investigator sheets.  Introducing Isaac, from "The Binding of Isaac".

Well that's all fine and good, but what other characters can you switch too?

There's also a hidden 6th character, simply entitled ???, but he's not in this preview.  He is in the file down below, which includes all 7 investigator sheets and the personal story for Isaac. Enjoy

Interesting idea, though possibly overpowered, as it's like having six or seven abilities on one investigator. How does the max Stamina / Sanity work when switching between characters?

Also the artwork is a bit rubbish. I'm pretty sure you should be able to find Old Masters for each Biblical characters at www.wikipaintings.org

Actually the bad images is there flavorfully.  These are all technically the same character, as this is Isaac from "The Binding of Isaac" video game, not the biblical event.  Namely, this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Binding_of_Isaac_%28video_game%29

I do agree that Isaac is a little overpowered just on account of how many abilities he has.  However, I find that the clue token requirement and having the switching restricted to Upkeep only help balance it out greatly, forcing the player to make smart decisions about which ability set they want to have active, since often it will remain active for quite a while.

When switching to a different character, only your maximum values change, not your current values.  If your current value ever exceeds your maximum value for either stamina or sanity, your current stamina/sanity is immediately reduced to your maximum.

Example: Let's say I have a max of 5 stamina and 5 sanity, and both values are full.  Then, next upkeep I switch to Cain who has a max of 4 and 4.  Upon switching, because my current values (5 / 5) are higher than my new maximums (4 / 4), I would immediately lose 1 stamina and 1 sanity to keep up with my new limits.

Example 2: If I have Eve (6 / 4), and both values are full, what happens when I switch to Judas (4 / 5)?  My Sanity being at 6 would immediately be reduced down to 4 to keep up with the new limit.  However, my current stamina stays at 4 since my new stamina limit actually increased.  Unfortunately, I don't immediately recover any stamina upon switching, unless the effect says so (Magdalene).

I was looking through this and wanted to see try and balance their game and get things running. I can't find any means to contact the original creator but I would love to see this all come to fruition.

Radio Cousin version whatever. He's in pretty good shape right now, he has a bit of a hard time starting out with 0 clue tokens but he can take care of a lot of nasty monsters right off the bat or even ace a serious problem once he's got one more token. Give him a try! Despite starting with an enchanted blade his fight/will totals are totally inline with other investigators.

To me at least, Raidou still seems excessively powerful.  Having a 4 Fight, 6 Will character puts them vastly over the top when it comes to combat, and also giving him a +4 single hand weapon puts him way ahead of most characters.  That in and of itself is possibly fine, but when combined with the ability to auto-succeed entire combat checks (not adding successes, just flat out winning), I don't actually see any weaknesses to playing him.  There's nothing really interesting here since his stats and abilities combined just guarantee too much.

To be more clear, I can't think of a single monster encounter that could actually give this guy a really hard time if he either has 2 monster trophies or a backup physical weapon.

Thanks for your input Shining Aquas but let me walk you through the process of me coming to accept his 4 Fight/6 Will with an enchanted blade.. Since I wanted him armed with a with a weapon I decided to compare the fight/will totals of other investigators combined with their weapon. I made a post on BGG about it, I'll repost the data here. Other people might also find the data valuable for making their own investigators!

So how does Raidou compare to these investigators? His max fight/will dice will come up to 11, totally inline with with the other armed investigators that top out at 13 with no sanity loss. The advantage Raidou has over high fight/will investigators (besides his ability) are magic damage, 2 focus, 5/5 split to eat some horror and stamina loss, and the ability to pass most horror checks. But he can't reliably close gates without a blessing, starts out with enough money for one hospital visit, and 0 clue tokens. These might not seem like big issues, especially since he can grab clue tokens from locations but they're problematic during play.

But how does Raidou play? He's all about monster token management since you really want to use his abilities and use your tokens normally. Sounds simple but you run into all sorts of tough decisions every game since there's plenty of monsters Raidou simply cannot deal with without using Summon, clue tokens or turns to get money and shop for more weapons. Arkham knows when you're playing Raidou so you'll rarely see Culists, Zombies, Ghouls or Manics hit the table while you drown in Gugg, Dark Young, Shoggoth and whatever other horrible creatures leave you with 7 or less fight dice to make 4 successes. Playing with Dunwich and no more than 3 players may have affected how powerful he seemed during playtesting but there was no point when it felt like he was too powerful.

Personally, as a rule of thumb, a balance character will have all the slider numbers in one columm add up to fifteen, with one extra point allowed for every point below ten the combined San/Stam stats add up to. With Radiou's stats, it comes up to 16 with a 10 for San/Stam. I supspect lowering the will stat by one would go a long way to fixing this.

Not bad at all… though I'd suggest making the Sanity/Will situation a bit less extreme… 4 San / 6 Stam, and maybe adjust the skill track so he's got 2-5 Fight and 1-4 Will instead.

(A character who starts with a random ally is going to be "customized" a bit by that ally's bonuses, so it's probably best to err on the side of the character not having very extreme stats to start with. The Expedition Leader has ALL stats 1-4…)

Being 'delayed' is not very common, so I'd make the Personal Story 'fail' condition harsher: if he fails the story, just take the sword off him; return it to the box.

(Also: the Personal Story conditions say "Gloy" where it should say "Glory".)

Reply #1470 | Published on 09 December 2012 - 12:41:05

Losing is SOG would contradict his second ability, and also is not very interesting. Turning a magical weapon into physical? Now that we haven't seen before. Also, being delayed isn't as uncommon than you think. Then again it might be too generous, so 2 delays instead of 3 is probably best.

Btw, Charlie Kane has an ally and 5 fight.

P.S. Personally I have no problem with 3 sanity+3 will investigators. In fact, Mark Harrigan is my favorite investigator, and he's way worse than my character; At least mine has a focus of 2 (Mark has 1), not to mention mine can recover sanity every turn!
